BREAKING: Feather shuts down for reconstruction

FeatherShutsDown1

The Feather Online will no longer be a functioning high school newspaper, starting March 27. Please follow Instagram, Facebook and Twitter for updates and check back in mid summer for a revised site.

New website planned for 2015-16 school year

All things must come to an end sometime during their life cycle. The Feather has been around for more than a decade now and the technology holding the website together has become dated. Therefore, The Feather is being moved to a new website and will be shut down for at least one month.

The Feather will be signing off the Internet today, March 27, and students will be beginning their spring break and will return to school April 7. The Feather is scheduled to be put back up sometime in summer.

Greg Stobbe has advised The Feather Online since 1997 and thinks it has been long overdue to get with the times and come out with a whole new website.

“Since 2004, the current Feather version has been the backbone of Fresno Christian High School publications students. Today it is obviously an outdated website; it is high time that The Feather editors got into the 2015’s with a WordPress version,” Stobbe said. “So when The Feather shuts down, it will also give the staff and The Feather Online the opportunity for growth with new plug-ins and all kinds of features in the near future.”

Editor-in-Chief Sara Peterson, ’15, believes that this redesign of the newspaper will give veterans of The Feather a chance to train new staffers for their new positions when the seniors leave this year.

“I think it is good that The Feather is going to be shut down for a month, it gives us a chance to work with new staffers and to teach them things they didn’t really catch on this year,” Peterson said. “Also we are going to be getting our new website up and that will be good for The Feather because our website is outdated. Next year, even though I will not be here to see it, The Feather is going to do very well with their new website.”

This is a good plan because The Feather has a very outdated layout so it is a lot harder for the editors to edit things because they have to code then put in pictures. This new website will make it a lot more efficient. Also it will be easier to train new people next year and we are going to come back twice as strong. –Chloe Mueller, Co-Editor-in-Chief

During the construction of the new Feather website, all social media will still be available and current for those interested. IT Director Robert Hyatt will start off the redesign and the shut down The Feather Online, setting up a page where it currently exists which will lead readers to social media links including Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. After the redesign of the Fresno Christian website, Hyatt is excited to see the changes in the weeks ahead.

“I would expect to see as radical of a change from the old Fresno Christian website to the new Fresno Christian website,” Hyatt said. “It will be dynamic. It will be unique. From looking at all the other websites that we looked into from other school newspapers, ours will look nothing like them, but it will be fantastic. I have no doubt.”

Junior Chloe Mueller is Co-Editor-in-Chief this year on The Feather and will continue on next year, solo as Editor-in-Chief. After two years of being in journalism, she is glad to see something new is happening with the school newspaper.

“This is a good plan because The Feather has a very outdated layout so it is a lot harder for the editors to edit things because they have to code then put in pictures,” Mueller said. “This new website will make it a lot more efficient. Also it will be easier to train new people next year and we are going to come back twice as strong.”

Please continue to look for posts via Feather social media and as more information becomes available, Feather staff and editors will share information about school and community news, sports and features.

“This is a good plan because The Feather has a very outdated layout so it is a lot harder for the editors to edit things because they have to code then put in pictures,” Mueller said. “This new website will make it a lot more efficient. Also it will be easier to train new people next year and we are going to come back twice as strong.”

NOTS parent viewing scheduled for March 28

Night of the Stars (NOTS) is a night for high school students to dress up and watch each class’ long-awaited film. With every weekend devoted to filming the movies, the time has come for parents to see their children’s work. The parent viewing will be held Saturday, March 28 at 9 a.m. (the morning of NOTS) and will go through 11 a.m. in the Green Room.

The theme will be following the actual event’s theme as Jardin De Fleur. Snacks and drinks will be provided and all high school parents are available to come.

Vicky Belmont, leadership director, oversees the students for NOTS and makes sure all the planning stays organized.

“It allows the parents to see what the kids have been working on and it kinda gives them a little taste of what the kids are going to do that night,” Belmont said. “They get to vote on the best picture which is called the Parents Choice Award.”

Senior Kathryn Damschen, volunteered to lead up the committee alongside Chloe Muller. She hopes to set high standards for the viewing and impress the parents.

“I wanted to make it really good this year and something that people can look back on and use it as an example for the future,” Damschen said. “Basically we’re giving the parents a little taste of NOTS. We’re going to have French themed food, just like what we’re having at actual NOTS. There’s going to have tablecloths, centerpieces, refreshments. We wanted to make it better than it’s ever been and set a precedent for the following years.”

Baseball sport shorts: Firebaugh

Boys Baseball sport shorts, 2015

For a preview to the Eagles baseball season and look at their scores so far, check out the score on Maxpreps, 2014-2015, for dates, times, and other winter sports.

Also check out the schedule for this year baseball season on Fresno Christian athletic website. The overall score for FC is currently 8-1. The first league game will be played on April 7.

Disappointing loss for FC, March 24

Looking to extend their win streak, the Fresno Christian Eagles travelled to Firebaugh High School Tuesday to play the reigning West Sierra League Champions. With the wind howling that afternoon, defense was sure to be more difficult than normal.

The game started well for FC, loading the bases early in the first inning with only one out. However, after hitting into a double play to end the inning, momentum quickly swung the other way. Firebaugh carried over that momentum into their at-bats, as they drove in five runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. In the second, FC was forced to go to their bullpen after starter senior Dillon Owens’ arm was throbbing with pain.

As a result, the Firebaugh bats continued to roll, and the Eagle defense continued to struggle and get outs. In the top of the third, FC again loaded the bases but was unable to capitalize. Over the course of the game, FC left 7 runners on in scoring position and were unable to drive them in. The game was called after five innings, as Firebaugh took the 17-0 shutout win.

Senior John Dooman was disappointed with the result and said the team was just lacking focus during the game.

“The game was terrible,” Dooman said. “I dont know if we just expected to win because we were on such a big winning streak, or if we played timid because they were a better team then us, but we couldn’t make the routine plays or make solid plays on defense and we let the game get out of hand.”

Baseball sport shorts: Coast Union

Endicott-against-Coast-Union

Freshman Roman Endicott defended the plate against a would-be Coast Union runner, March 21.

An easy win for the Eagles, March 21

Saturday, March 21 the Fresno Christian baseball team travelled to beautiful Cambria California to play a double header against Coast Union High School. The Eagles entered the weekend on a six game winning streak and looked to keep the hot streak going.

The game started just the way the Eagles wanted it to, scoring one run early in the top of the first. However, Coast Union came back with a run of their own to tie it early. After that, neither team was really able to pull away. Every other inning or so, each team would get a few hits to help get their team going, but both defenses shut things down before either team really gained momentum. Heading into the seventh, the Eagles led 6-3.

In the top of the seventh, FC got some runners on base but were unable to capitalize and bring them in. In the bottom of the inning, the Coast Union offense came alive, loading the bases with nobody out, and threating to end the game on a walk off hit. Senior Dillon Owens came into the game to try and hold CU from taking the lead. Union was able to tie the game and it was sent into extra innings.

Well past noon, the game dragged on for quite a while. Neither team was able to drive in a run, although there were many opportunities on each side. Clutch defensive plays by the Eagles kept their dreams of winning alive, including a double play that ended with a play at the plate to save the game. Finally, after their starter went 11 innings, Union finally went to their bullpen. As a result, the Eagles offense exploded, scoring seven runs and putting the game away in the top of the 12th. The final score listed FC the winner, 13-6.

After about a 25-minute intermission, the second game was underway. With players, coaches, and fans alike all drained of energy following the first game’s excitement, the second game was a struggle. However, the Eagles were able to keep focus and jumped out to an early lead. FC never looked back, as they remained in the lead for the rest of the game and came away with the 12-1 victory.

Get to know: Trevor Beal

Basketball has been a strong passion for Trevor Beal, he began playing in fourth grade and joined the varsity team his freshman year. He has played every position over the years, but his favorite is shooting guard.

Jacobson: How long have you been attending Fresno Christian?

Beal: Since the fourth grade, I came to Fresno Christian from Clovis Christian and it was a big change. Fresno Christian, even though it is small, has many good aspects athletically and academically.

Jacobson: Do you play any sports other than basketball?

Beal: Even though basketball is my favorite sport by far, I also play golf. Golf is a very relaxing sport, but at the same time, very mentally challenging.

Jacobson: What is your favorite part about playing sports?

Beal: Winning games. My least favorite part is of course is losing games, losing is one of the biggest reasons I practice and put in extra work. Playing basketball and golfing have taught me to push myself so that I can win.

Jacobson: What is your favorite Bible verse?

Beal: Probably Jeremiah 29:11. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jacobson: What is your most cherished school memory?

Beal: My favorite memory from Fresno Christian is from my freshman year when our basketball team won the Valley Championship, and continued on to the second round of the State Basketball Playoffs.

Jacobson: What are your goals this year?

Beal: My goals for the rest of this year are to excel in academics and on the golf course and know that I had a good high school experience.

Jacobson: Now that you are a senior, what challenges have you been facing?

Beal: Getting acquainted with the real world. People talk about how it?s not that much different, but it is. There?s a lot more that goes into just living when you?re older.

Jacobson: Who inspires and motivates you?

Beal: I motivate myself. My dad also gives a lot of inspiration and coaches me.

Jacobson: Where will you be attending next fall and what do you want to major in?

Beal: I will be attending Fresno State and i plan to major in finance. After graduating from Fresno State, I plan on attaining my law degree from University of San Francisco.

FC hits NY: Day 3 (SLIDESHOW, VIDEO)

Presentations1Ryan King, Photographer

Editors-in-Chief Sara Peterson, left, and Chloe Mueller taught a session called: ‘Thriving in Cyberspace’ at the 91st CSPA convention, March 19. This session highlighted the work routine of the Feather and how staffers manage online outlets such as social media.

After concluding their first full day in New York, The Feather editors began their Wednesday with an agenda. Deporting from their hotel at 8 a.m., students caught a subway ride and headed to Columbia University.

This journey to Columbia University is the central purpose for the New York trip. Here, the students attended – and even taught – educational, journalism-based sessions at the CSPA’s 91st annual Spring Scholastic Convention.

These sessions focus on many aspects of journalism and publications. In the first session, Editors-in-Chief Sara Peterson and Chloe Mueller taught their own class: ‘Thriving in Cyberspace’. This session highlighted the work routine of the Feather and how staffers manage online outlets such as social media.

Peterson, who presented for the first time, reports her initial feelings of anxiety were unnecessary, as the session went smoothly.

“I was a bit nervous before we presented, because I’ve never done it before,” Peterson said. “I just didn’t know what to expect. Things ended up going well and I think we connected with our audience.”

During the second session, Callista Fries, Media Specialist, taught another group about the ins-and-outs of podcasting. Meanwhile, other staffers visited other classrooms to expand their knowledge. These classes included sessions about advertisement, young adults in the work field and interviewing techniques.

After spending the morning at Columbia, the students grabbed a bite to eat as FC hits NY continues. Several students dined at Tom’s Restaurant (made famous by Seinfeld), while others stopped at a pizza parlor.

After a few more educational sessions, students headed out for the city. The group took a trip to Herald Square, the home of the world’s largest store (Macy’s) and many other shopping attractions.

Finally, staffers ended their night with a Broadway play. Students ended their shopping adventure and gathered together to watch Phantom of the Opera at 8 p.m. The dinner choice was left to students, who all bought food at various places.

Baseball sport shorts: Mendota

Kings-christian-BaseballMichael Fu, photographer

Coming off wins against Kings Christian and Mendota, FC will next take on Coast Union, March 21.

The overall score for FC is currently 7-1. The first league game will be played on April 7.

FC pulls through to take the win, March 17

Coming off a victory against Kings Christian the Friday before, the Eagles of Fresno Christian looked to continue their hot streak and extend their winning streak. Sophomore Jorge Castro was set to take the ball for the Eagles and try to stop the Aztec offense.

The Eagles came out and fired early, scoring five runs in the top of the first and sent a message to the Aztec’s defense. Mendota came back with a force of their own, getting runners on early in the bottom of the inning and driving in three runs of their own.

After the first, both teams began to settle into their grove and slow down the offense. FC was able to score one more in the second before Mendota went to their bullpen and began to quiet the Eagles bats. Meanwhile, Castro was able to keep Mendota at check for the rest of the game, with the defense solid behind him.

Late in the game, the Eagles tacked on one more in the sixth, and another in the top of the seventh to stretch the lead to 5. Castro stayed in for the final inning to try to secure the win and a complete game. With only one out, the Aztecs were able to get a runner on second and put some pressure on the Eagle D. However, a great play in the outfield by Junior Tyler Breedlove led to a double play and secured the win for FC.

Junior Bailey Brogan said the game went well, and their execution showed the team they can compete with anyone.

“The game went well,” Brogan said, “We executed as a team and made the plays we needed to. Our hitting came through and once our defense settled down we were playing our best. The game showed we can play with the best in our division, and we can get hits off even the best pitchers teams have to offer. I look forward to many more games like this one.”

The Eagles are now 7-1 and play their next game Saturday, March 21 as the team takes a road trip to Cambria to play a double header against Coast Union.

On March 20th from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., there will be a blood drive on Fresno Christian?s campus in honor of Emily. Baseball sport shorts: Kings Christian

The Eagles traveled to Lemoore and defeated the Crusaders of Kings Christian, 9-3, March 13. Be sure to catch the Eagles in action against Mendota, March 17.

The overall score for FC is currently 6-1. The first league game will be played on April 7.

Eagles win 9-3 over rival, March 13

Travelling to Lemoore Friday, the Fresno Christian baseball team was set to play the Crusaders of Kings Christian. The two schools had a bit of history between their football programs, being in the two previous 8-man championship football game, and much of that emotion was set to be shown on the diamond that afternoon.

Throwing their ace, the Crusaders were able to keep the eagles bats at check early in the game, leading to a scoreless top half of the inning. In the field, Senior Dillon Owens took the ball for the Eagles, and pitched a scoreless few innings. After scoring one run in the second, the Eagles’ offense exploded in the third for four runs during a two-out rally, and quickly jumped out to a five run lead. Kings was able to close the margin, bringing in one in the bottom of the inning, but struggled to bring in runs for the remainder of the game.

The Eagles picked up one more in the fourth, and three more in the top of fifth, increasing their lead. Meanwhile, Kings was able to bring in one more in the bottom of the sixth, which would be the last time they would see Owens. In the seventh Taylor Howard came in to relive Owens and struggled early on. Freshman Roman Endicott came in with one out and the bases loaded to try to put the game away. After striking out the first batter and forcing a ground ball for the next, the Eagles got out of the jam and came away with the 9-3 victory.

Tyler Sellers, ’16, was very excited about the outcome of the game and was really encouraged by how everyone played.

“The game was great,” Sellers said. “It showed us we were able to compete with and beat one of the better teams in our division. The guys played well and played hard until the end. we faced a good picture and proved to ourselves we cam hit off the best teams have to offer. Overall I’m very excited for what the rest of the season holds.”

The Eagles are now 6-1 and are currently on a five game winning streak. The Eagles next game will be on Tuesday, March 17 as the team travels to Mendota High School.

Baseball sport short: Stone Ridge Christian

Jeremy Brown | The Feather Online Archive

The Eagles defeated Stone Ridge Christian, 22-7, March 7, and now will travel to Lemoore to play Kings Christian, March 14.

The overall score for FC is currently 5-1. The first league game will be played on April 7.

The Eagles take home another win, 22-9

For the Eagles second double-header of the season, Fresno Christian hosted the visiting Knights of Stone Ridge Christian, Sat., March 7. The Eagles were looking to keep their momentum coming off a big game against Laton earlier in the week.

In the first game, Junior Tyler Sellers took the ball and started off with a nine pitch, nine strikes inning and held the Knights scoreless. In the bottom of the inning, the Eagles bats made a statement early, driving in four runs. However, in the top of the second, Stone Ridge came back with six runs of their own to take the lead.

From then on neither team would let the other get hot. With both teams scoring a few runs here and there, by the sixth inning the Eagles led 11-9. However, after holding the Knights scoreless in the top of the inning, the Eagles were able to get their offense scoring again and were able to put the game away. The final score read 22-9.

Overall the games went very well. The underclassman played really well in the first game and gained some valuable experience. The starters in the second game came through as well and hit the ball effectively. We still have to work defensively on simply ground balls and throwing errors, but the game was helpful for the team to get some confidence before some tougher games coming up. –Senior Dillon Owens

In the second game Senior Dillon Owens took the ball for the Eagles and kept the Knights in check. Offensively, the Eagles could not be stopped. Scoring five runs in the first and 11 in the second, they quickly put the game away. The Knights showed some life in the fifth, but by then it was too late. Owens pitch a complete game and got the win, as the Eagles easily came away with a 19-4 victory.

Owens was happy with the way the team played as a whole, but says they still have to work on the little things.

“Overall the games went very well.” Owens said. “The underclassman played really well in the first game and gained some valuable experience. The starters in the second game came through as well and hit the ball effectively. We still have to work defensively on simply ground balls and throwing errors, but the game was helpful for the team to get some confidence before some tougher games coming up.”

The Eagles next game will be on March 13, as the team travels to Lemoore to face Kings Christian.
